Someone will be along to post pictures shortly, no doubt. These were the closest bases to Cuba and housed missiles that were on 24/7 active readiness in the frightening event of a strike. Inside Everglade National Park, built into the swamps, were 4 Nike Missile bases, with 4 bunker each housing 6 Nike missiles. Everglades National Park is a beautiful and beloved national park to visit in Florida, but not many people know that hidden deep within there is a massive and abandoned rocket testing site. Missile Site was part of the first multi-stage Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles, which were used during the Cold War and later. Folks from this site and other individuals have visted these places in passing, if not at length, including myself. Scary stuff from the heigt of the cold war. Missile Site in Greeley is one of the eeriest places in the country, as per Insider's recently released The eeriest abandoned place in every state. This is an actual abandoned silo known as the Nike silo.Īll of these locations still remain, in various states, with the underground storage complex being the one that has changed the most. Following the 1991 START treaty, these facilities along with others in Missouri and North Dakota were dismantled. especially when, at one time, nine Atlas missile silos near. For a generation, the South Dakota landscape was dotted by 150 nuclear missile silos and 15 launch control facilities. While we’re certainly glad that it isn’t currently in use, it’s eerie to see it so close to such a charming and peaceful community. The scenes involving the large cargo elevator and the missle silo were also shot in Pennsylvania, but in a different location. YouTuber Jeff Brod captured some interesting drone footage of a Cold War era missile site that now sits right next to the Fox Ridge neighborhood. It is located on Long Pine Key Road in the Everglades National Park. It is now called the Gateway Storage Complex, and besides being greatly rennovated (and having its underground lake drained), it is still largely the same. The Nike Missile Site HM-69 (also known as Hole in the Donut or Everglades Nike Site or Missile Base) is a former Nike-Hercules missile base, now listed as a historic site west of Homestead, Florida, United States. The interior shots of most of the "bunker," namely the tunnels and the labs, were shot in the Wampum limestone mine in Pennsylvania. The outside scenes (the surface) were filmed on Sanibel Island, Florida. One was used as a control room, the other for generating power. The "bunker" location from Day of the Dead was filmed in three seperate locations. The property includes three 160-foot missile silos and two gigantic domes, each more than 100 feet across.
